After one of the hottest days out at Chula Vista, Mike Day wins the first every BMX Olympic trials! It was such a crazy race and I am absolutely exhausted from screaming and jumping up and down.
The race was set up with points awarded for a time trial, 3 motos, and a main. With Bub's out with a broken Talus only 7 men were left to take the crown in an all out battle. Mikey cleans house in the TT being only 1 of 2 riders (the other being Cisar) to break into the 36 sec lap times. It looked to be a Day-Cisar show down as the race began and Steven proved to be on a mission holeshotting the first moto. He came out of the first corner a little too hot and overshot the step up nosed in crashing HARD. This gave Donny the lead but Mikey blew past him on the third straight to take the victory.
Cisar came back for the next two rounds but had a quad contusion which made it hard for him to power and you could tell he wasn't quite riding the same. Donny barely holds mikey off second round but by that point Mikey had all the confidence he needed and as he likes to say it was "game over."
Third moto Mikey charged out of the gate and never looked back, taking the lead and the win by nearly 3 bikes on Kris Fox (YA Kris!) Herman for the 3rd and Donny the 4th. The way the race was set up if a rider mathmatically didn't have a chance at taking the overall he wasn't allowed to race the final. Because all the boys were mixing it up so much this left only Donny and a 2 man final didn't offer him enough spaces between him and Mikey to take the lead so in 3 motos and a time trial Mikey clinched his Olympic dreams!
Once this was all figured out it was a mad house. Everyone was mobbing Mikey for a hug while he was thowin fist punches in the air. Coach G was cryin, the media was all over and security was tryin to keep the crowd from mobbing the track.
After the race was over the three automatic nominees to the team were awarded with official BMX Olympic Jerseys. Congrats to Mikey, Jill, and Kyle for being the first ever BMX Olympic team members.
It was a busy day in Chula Vista with a track meet also backing the BMX trials. After the race I went and watched some mens and womens pole vault to cheer some of my resident homies on. Stacey Dragila took the Pole Vault win today with her best jump in three years. Pretty fun stuff to watch, I posted a few pics from it as well as a few from the race. I was too busy screaming Mikey on to really take a lot of pics but the Mike Day fan club got a post as well as a full gate of men coming down the ramp.
Anyway I am beat so i'm gonna hit the sack.
