It took a little over 30hrs of traveling to make it here to Adelaide. Trip started off on the wrong foot in SD when we tried to check in as a group of 10 with 33 bags and paper tickets. 2 people didnt have Visas attached to their ticket and as if that wasn't ball up enough almost all of us had a golf bags that were overweight. The weight nazi at the counter was not only overwhelmed with all of our crap but was also clueless as to how to check us in with the paper tickets--why we had paper tickets is mystery to us all since the airline world now revolves around the e-ticket. As it turns out we sat there for an hour and a half getting things straightened out and if our flight to San Fran hadn't been delayed we very well may have missed it.
The flight from San Fran to Sydney turned out to be a lot better than I thought it would be. I scored my own row and slept probably 9hrs of the 14hr flight so it went by pretty fast. Once we landed in Sydney I learned a valuable lesson about not declaring food on my customs form. A cute little beagle attacked my bag and won a treat for finding perfectly untouched sealed Beef jerky which apparently is illegal to bring in. I was almost awarded a $250 fine for not declaring it but I played stupid American pretty well and was let off with a warning. They ended up confiscating about half of my food (nuts, dried fruit and granola) even questioning my cytomax for fear it contained protein powder. Jill and I got separated coming through and I happened to be pushing the cart that had 3 of our bikes on it which added to the hassle because they needed to check each and every tire and shoe for specks of dirt. Needless to say by the time I made it through the cattle stampede I was less than cheery about being in Australia.
Its been good though since we arrived in Adelaide. They call it the "city of churches" and just looking out my hotel room window I can see a few steeples attached to 19th century cathedrals. Its pretty cool, we have some time to kill before we can ride on Thursday so hopefully we can check some stuff out. Internet here at this 5 star hotel is a steep $30 per day so i'm not sure I will be updating all that much, but I hear freecaster.net will be broadcasting the race live on the internet, not sure of the schedule but keep your eyes out, I am sure it will be posted soon.
