We've been riding a lot here this last week. The trails are dialed and we've been riding the first half of the track. Ritz is touching up the last half today for the big ribbon cutting ceremony tomorrow. The media has been in town all week and we get more of it tomorrow. Nike did a full production shoot with Mikey, Bubba and dR that included hair and make-up and a crew of 30 people whirling around them. We got a sneak peak at the official gear the US team will be wearing at the games and all I can say is its "RAD" we are all pretty stoked on it. We also had the associated press and NBC shooting us this week as well. I was told BMX is going to be "prime-time" for the games this year so thats great news for the sport but right now for us it means lots of bright lights and waiting around.
Last night I went up to the Anaheim Supercross with Mikey, Jill and Cesar to watch Stewart romp on Reed again, but as it turns out he had a bum knee and couldn't ride so it turned into the Chad Reed show. It was a retro theme last night complete with a 1986 replica track that had a dirt spine, hip-tables, and a sand pit last corner. Not a traditional track so the change up was kind of cool. This race in 1986 is considered by some to be the greatest battle of all time betweek Rick Johnson and David Bailey (who was later paralyzed). Last night Bailey rode out on a motorcycle with Johnson for the first time since his accident and that was cool to see. They brought out some legends of the sport including Carmichael and McGrath who with Reed threw down some big style for the crowd. They haven't lost their touch for sure, too bad they are retired. Imagine RC and McGrath with Stewart and Reed--now that would be a race! Dungee took the lites win and we rolled out with five laps left of the 450 class since Reed was killin it and we didnt feel like sitting in the Angels parking lot for 2hrs.
Its kind of hard for me to envision what it would be like to hold a BMX race on a 1986 replica track. Not sure how I would hangle the flat corners and 2 rollers per striaght. Especially after riding a SX ramp all week going 35mph after five pedals and ramping 30ft jumps. The sport has changed a lot for sure but the roots are still the same. It might be kind of cool to hold a retro race and play some foot down in the corners....
