Day three of the Olympics had the first day of competition. It was a great debut for the sport. A shortened practice/warm-up session was followed by the time trials for seeding. It was a mixed day for the GO211 team.
Kyle Bennett was smoken’ hot during practice but, could only manage 12th place in the time trials. This put him in the same quarter final as World Champ Maris Strombergs. KB’s started the day off well when he scored a 2nd from gate 6. In his second round Kyle finished 4th.
The third and final round of the day was action packed. Riders went down in a huge pile-up in turn one and Kyle was left lying on the track. Kyle was pretty beat up. The track doctor popped his shoulder back in and KB rode out the race in pain. He still managed to make it out of his quarters in fourth spot. The physio and team USA staff will be working hard throughout the night to have him back on the track again tomorrow.
Great Britain Go211 rider Liam Phillips was the first rider on the track in the time trial. His time put him down in 28th. He was among the action/carnage in Kyle Bennett’s quarter finals. With a 5th, 6th and a 7th in his three rounds of quarters, Liam missed the cut into the next round.
“The Mosquito” Jonathan Suarez has shaken off his jersey issues and posted a time trial time of 36.325 to be the top qualifier of the GO211 riders and be in 8th. His quarter finals didn’t go so well. An 8th, 4th and 5th have him missing the cut.
Donny Robinson didn’t have a great time trial, but it wasn’t the end of the world. His time trial position of 24th didn’t seem to bother dR too much. He drew the same quarter final as Suarez. He qualified out third. Donny seemed to get better as the day went on. His 6th in the first round must have been a concern though! Donny stepped up by finishing with a 2nd and 3rd.
This time tomorrow we will have a new Olympic Champion. Team GO211 still has two riders in the mix.
